Altan Pharmaceuticals, the Spanish subsidiary of Altan Pharma Ltd., a company specialized in the development, manufacture and marketing of injectable drugs for hospital use, is pleased to announce the launch of the generic of sedative Dexmedetomidine.
Dexmedetomidine has been widely used, for more than 20 years, in sedation of intubated patients in intensive care units, as well as in sedation of non-intubated patients undergoing surgical or diagnostic procedures. The absence of respiratory depression, minimal cardiovascular effects, analgesic properties (in addition to sedatives) and preservation of the sleep pattern, make Dexmedetomidine an especially useful drug for intensivists and anesthesiologists.
In addition to the ampoule and vial presentations, Altan will launch Dexmedetomidine in a ” ready-to-use bag “ in the coming months. With this presentation, drug preparation processes, before its administration, are no longer necessary and can help reduce medication errors. The Spanish Ministry of Health in its ‘Patient Safety Strategy of the National Health System 2015-2020’ indicates that, in the hospital setting, there are 17 medication errors per day per 100 hospitalized patients, 16% being prescription errors, 27% errors in transcription, 48% errors in dispensing and, finally, 9% at the time of administration.
